As I layer coil upon coil in the building of this sculpture and use my fingers to slowly smooth and shape the clay, I reflect on the thing that has consumed me so completely this year: Motherhood. A constant tangle of limbs, a criss-cross of scars, the ultimate dichotomy of tension and relaxation. The time I have in the studio for the meditation that is creative work is now sparce and more treasured than ever. As I build this piece it twists and turns around itself, simultaneously entangled and unwinding, sharp and soft, fleshy and freckled, raw and golden.
